Labradorite is a feldspar with stunning chatoyancy and flashes of blue, purple and yellow called labradorescence. This is formed by intergrowths of crystal which are compatible at high temperatures but become incompatible at lower temperatures and so separate, making layers. Light then enters and is refracted between the different layers and combines with other rays of light. This slows it down and produces a different wavelength to what it was when it entered, creating stunning colours.
